How to Read Horse Racing Form
Form Figures
Form figures show recent finishing positions. "1234" means the horse finished 1st, 2nd, 3rd, then 4th in its last four races.
0 = Finished outside top 9 | - = Break between races | F = Fell | P = Pulled up
Track Conditions
Check if the horse performs well on the going (track condition). Some horses prefer firm ground, others like soft. South African tracks vary from firm to soft depending on weather.
Distance & Class
Check if the horse has won at this distance before. Also consider class - a horse dropping in class often runs well, while stepping up in class is a challenge.
Jockey & Trainer Form
Top jockeys and trainers in South Africa include names like S'manga Khumalo, Muzi Yeni, and trainers like Sean Tarry and Justin Snaith. Their strike rates matter.
Each-Way Betting Explained
An each-way bet is actually two bets: one for the horse to win, and one for the horse to place (usually top 3 in fields of 8+).
Example:
R100 each-way at 10/1 = R200 total stake
If horse wins: Win bet pays R1,100 + Place bet (usually 1/4 odds) pays R325 = R1,425 return
If horse places 2nd or 3rd: Only place bet pays = R325 return
Each-way bets are great for finding value on horses at longer odds who you think will run well without necessarily winning.
